Speaker Dr. Tadashi Ito
(Professor at Osaka University, Graduate School of Engineering Science,Division of Material Physics)
Abstract A periodic structure of dielectric spheres, so-called a "photonic crystal," brings about a peculiar photon dispersion with band gap called a "photonic band" like an "electron band" due to the crystal periodic potential. Here we show the experimental results on far- and near-field optical measurements in a close-packed monolayer of dielectric spheres, which forms a quasi-two-dimensional photonic crystal: Far-field transmission spectra in oblique incidence show how to form the photonic band; near-field spectroscopy probes the light propagation inside the photonic crystal. These results help feasibility study on photonic circuits of the size less than the light wavelength. Other subjects in our laboratory, e.g. laser spectroscopy of quantum dots, will be also presented in the talk.
