Lecturer "Application of statistical mechanics to complex networks;
Speaker Mr. Jun Ohkubo
(Graduate School of Information Sciences, Tohoku University, JSPS Research Fellow)
Abstracts In recent years, complex networks have attracted a lot of interests in research fields of social sciences, engineering, bioscience, and physics. One of the features of these studies is that a network consists of a large number of nodes and edges. Until now, many characteristics, such as scale free property or small world property, have been discovered in real world networks. In this presentation, we will talk about relationships between statistical mechanics and complex networks. Because statistical mechanics also deals with systems which consist of a lot of components, many analytical methods and concepts in statistical mechanics are available for the study of complex networks. After a brief introduction to complex networks, we will give a few examples in which concepts of statistical mechanics can be used in order to understand complex networks. Especially, network generation problems and community detection problems will be presented.
