Abstract I will talk about my resent research results. First topic is demonstration of photon detection based on a sub-Geiger mode InGaAs avalanche photodiode (InGaAs APD). In this mode, it is possible to detect photons in free-running mode. In contrast, the conventional operation mode (gated mode) of InGaAs APDs requires prior timing information for detecting photons. The second topic is demonstration of near-optimal displacement receivers for discriminating coherent states. This receiver performance surpasses the shot-noise limit that is signal-discrimination limit for on-off keyed signals by using photon counting.
