What is the
Student Communities Project?

Student Communities Project Overview

  • - What is the Student Communities Project?

The Student Communities Project was launched in 2025 following the transition to the GPAI 2.0 framework. The project promotes practical activities that incorporate student voices into discussions on key issues related to AI and society within GPAI and the development of networks among students.
By bringing together students, educators, researchers, industry, civil society, and policymakers, the project explores the impacts of AI on human skills, learning processes, and social change or transition. It also aims to ensure that student voices are reflected in international discussions on AI governance and public policy.

  • - Background and Past Activities of the Student Communities Project

The Student Communities Project builds on initiatives that originated under the Future of Work Working Group (hereinafter “FoW WG”) in the GPAI 1.0 framework.
Within the FoW WG, the Observation Platform of AI at the Workplace project was launched to collect case studies on the use of AI in workplaces across different regions. As part of this initiative, students have conducted company visits and interview-based research.
The Japan team was established in 2021, led by Yuko Harayama and Arisa Ema, who served as expert members of the FoW WG, along with professors from multiple universities in Japan, who act as supervisors for students. Since its establishment, the team has continuously contributed to the project. Under the guidance of their supervisors, students took the initiative in planning and conducting interview-based research, including the selection of research sites and the preparation of reports. The findings have been compiled annually as research reports by the Japan team and made publicly available.

  • - Advancing the Student Communities Project

The Student Communities Project has grown into a collaborative international initiative across the Tokyo, Paris, and Montreal GPAI Expert Support Centers. Each center conducts its own activities while also organizing joint presentation events, creating opportunities for students to participate in international discussions on AI governance and network with students from other regions.
At the Tokyo Center, the Student-led Field Research Programme is implemented as a continuation and further development of the activities of the FoW WG Japan team. Through this program, students visit companies and other organizations that have implemented AI, and conduct interview-based research under the guidance of their supervisors. Insights gained from the analysis of cases of AI application in industry and society, including its impact on workers and work environments, are compiled and shared through this website and through domestic and international exchanges.
Through these efforts, the Tokyo Center promotes the inclusion of student-led insights in international discussions and contributes to the development of AI governance and public policy.
