What is Aurora Alert?
Aurora Alert is the website which delivers aurora forecast and the current sky images of areas in the auroral belt. This website is operated by the Space Environment Laboratory, Applied Electromagnetic Research Institute in the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology.
The “Simulated Distribution” is created by using calculation results of a real-time global magnetosphere simulation driven by the real-time solar wind data acquired by DSCOVR. The real-time magnetosphere simulation is operated on the high-speed computing system at NICT. (Due to the limitation of the current real-time simulator, auroral data cannot be obtained at latitudes lower than the latitude of about 60 degrees in the geomagnetic coordinate system. This limit latitude may be seen as boundaries, when, for example, the aurora is very active.)
The aurora forecast has been calculated automatically based on Aurora Electrojet (AE) index and the real-time data of solar wind by DSCOVR. Aurora images are taken by live cameras installed in Alaska and Syowa Station.

Acknowledgement
Real-time values of AL index and solar wind data by DSCOVR are used for the aurora forecast calculation. We would like to thank the following institutions for their cooperation and efforts operating these stations and providing data.
World data center for Geomagnetism Kyoto, Abisko [SGU, Sweden], Cape Chelyuskin [AARI, Russia], Tixi [IKFIA and AARI, Russia], Pebek [AARI, Russia], Barrow, College [USGS, USA], Yellowknife, Fort Churchill, Sanikiluaq (Poste-de-la-Baleine) [CGS, Canada], Narsarsuaq [DTU Space, Denmark], and Leirvogur [U. Iceland, Iceland] as well as the RapidMAG team (Kyoto Univ, JHU/APL, UoA, AARI, IDG), INTERMAGNET, National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA). We also thank the Real-time monitors at Syowa Station which is operated by Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition.
This web site is operated with the support of ”Promotion of observation and analysis of radio wave propagation,” commissioned research of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, Japan.
