Information Services Platform Laboratory

  • Print this page

Nowadays with the advent of Big Data, vast and heterogeneous information reflecting natural environments and social activities can be found everywhere on the Internet through various platforms such as sensing data, social media or blogs. There is a need for information services that can exploit this huge amount of data and for a platform where frontier researches and developments can take place. This platform would enable us to build valuable information assets from these large amounts of information on the Internet and allow any combination of these constructed information assets.

The Information Services Platform Laboratory is researching on and developing an information services platform that can rapidly provide composite services to satisfy user requirements. It is done by constructing extensive information assets while efficiently accessing big data in a wide range of fields including sensing data, scientific data and web archives. Then, these information assets are combined in different ways. In addition, the laboratory is implementing a platform that uses the New-Generation Network, in order to foster information service developments required to respond to ever-changing situations while utilizing information across various fields, such as disaster information analysis or data-centric science.

Service-Controlled Networking takes advantage of the high processing performance and scalability of the New-Generation Network in order to translate requests from applications utilizing large amount of distributed information assets into network control protocols to configure the networks dynamically. These technologies can configure the networks in a highly responsive and flexible manner, for unexpected application requirements and can synchronize the functions applied by the network with application requirements for efficient use.

Cyber-Physical Cloud Computing (CPCC) provides a cross-domain infrastructure to collect, integrate and analyze heterogeneous sensing data from real space information obtained from sensor devices and cyber space information extracted from social media and the Web. CPCC aims to discover associations among various events in different fields by integrating and analyzing the collected sensing data and to increase comprehensive understanding of situations of both disaster and peacetime.

Cross-Database Search System aims to facilitate the search of interdisciplinary and correlated datasets from large-scale, multi-domain and heterogeneous data. The search is based on spatial and temporal correlations among the data, on correlations between concepts and on citational correlations between data and documents. The system is useful in cases such as disaster information analysis or data centric science, by discovering information about natural phenomena and social phenomena related to a certain disaster from a variety of fields.

To help users to easily grasp the information from analyzed results of big data collected from various fields, Big Data Visualization is a technology to visualize the results of the analysis of big data using devices such as tiled display and 3D display. With this technology, users were able to quickly find relevant data such as the situation demands from the analyzed results.

Knowledge-Language Grid Testbed is a platform for users to develop information services by using large-scale information assets, which include a Web archive containing more than 10 million Web pages, the world’s largest scientific database, sensing data, and universal communication technologies of information analysis and multilingual translation. On the New Generation Network, technologies of the Information Services Platform Laboratory including the Service-Controlled Networking Middleware, Cyber-Physical Cloud Computing, Cross-DB Search System and Big Data Visualization Technology are implemented and operated as a testbed for information service developments. The laboratory provides information service developments to respond quickly to the ever-changing situations while utilizing information across various fields, such as disaster information analysis and data centric science.
