Lecturer "One- and Two-Dimensional Self-Assembly of Shape-Persistent Macrocyclic Compounds"
Speaker Prof. Yoshito Tobe
(Graduate School of Engineering Science, Osaka University)
Abstract Planar shape-persistent macrocyclic molecules consisting of benzene and acetylene units tend to self-assemble in solution due to pi-pi interactions and/or solvophobic interactions, forming one-dimensional aggregates possesseing tubular structures. In contrast, at the solid-liquid interface, these macrocycles self-assemble in two-dimension owing to intermolecular and/or molecule-substrate interactions, forming two-dimensional networks. After a brief introduction to the research activities in our laboratories, the above topics, mainly based on the results from our laboratories, will be presented.
