Abstracts Dynamics of spontaneous brain activity has recently been attracting interest of researchers. In this study, we focused on spatial distribution pattern of the phase of alpha activity, which is the main component of spontaneous human EEG, and studied the properties of its spatiotemporal dynamics. We found that the phase pattern dynamics of the alpha activity during the resting state are characterized by the transitions between quasi-stable traveling wave patterns, and that the transition probability between the patterns varies over time, resulting in the switching of the phase pattern with the maximum occurrence likelihood. It was also found that such properties are not observed in the surrogate data that have the same linear correlation structure as the original data, suggesting that the observed complex transition process is not random, but reflecting the underlying nonlinear dynamics of the neural system.
