Lecturer “New Dyes for Solar Cells - Can Coordination Chemistry Save the World?”
Speaker Dr. Neil Robertson
University of Edinburgh,Scotland
Abstract Low-cost solar energy is probably the most-important challenge of our time due to the urgent need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. The seminar will discuss two approaches to solar photovoltaics that depend on intrinsically low-cost materials and have the potential to open up new possibilities for the application of solar cells. Dye-sensitised solar cells (DSSC) involve the sensitisation of an oxide semiconductor with a light-harvesting dye. Our recent work has involved the study of new dyes to probe fundamental process and enhance performance of DSSC. Luminescent solar concentrators (LSC) comprise a photoluminescent plastic sheet that acts as a light-collection and concentration device to be used in conjunction with pn-junction solar cells. Studies to reduce losses in this type of device will be presented.
