Exchange of Information on Future GPAI Activities with Google Headquarters
On September 24, Mr. David Weller, Senior Director of Public Policy at Google Headquarters, who is currently visiting Japan, visited NICT (Nihonbashi) and exchanged information with Dr. HARAYAMA Yuko, Secretary General of the GPAI Tokyo Expert Support Center.
Mr. Weller expressed the view that discussions and ongoing research on governance issues related to AI is important, and that Japan is playing a significant role through initiatives such as the Hiroshima AI Process. Secretary General Harayama introduced the following initiatives: 1) the SAFE project conducted as part of the same process, 2) the transition to the GPAI 2.0 system based on an integrated partnership with the OECD, and 3) the Innovation Workshop (Tokyo IW) scheduled to be held in Tokyo next spring.
Regarding the Tokyo IW, Mr. Weller expressed his interest in considering ways to contribute to and participate in such discussions, in response to Secretary General Harayama’s explanation that it could become an important forum for AI experts and government officials from the OECD and GPAI to jointly discuss solutions to various issues related to AI utilization.
