Results of the Mini-Innovation Workshop with Student Participation from 7 Countries - Students from the Student Communities Project Gather in India Alongside the AI Summit -
On February 18, the Mini-Innovation Workshop (hereinafter “Mini IW”) was held as an official side event of the India AI Impact Summit at the Sheraton New Delhi Hotel in New Delhi, India. The event was co-organized by the 3 GPAI Expert Support Centers - Tokyo, Paris, and Montreal - and CEMCA (Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia), an India-based educational organization, and was held for students participating in the Student Communities project from each country. Dr. HARAYAMA Yuko, Secretary General of the GPAI Tokyo Expert Support Center, attended along with 3 other staff members from the Tokyo Center, as well as 2 faculty supervisors and 2 master’s students involved in the Student Communities project.
The Student Communities project is an international initiative implemented collaboratively by the 3 Centers. The Mini IW was organized with the aim of discussing AI use cases and AI governance challenges from a youth perspective, sharing experiences across countries, and supporting the launch of a student community in India. A total of 60 participants attended in person: 53 students from India, along with 7 students from the 3 Centers and the Council of Europe (representing Japan, Canada, France, Mexico, Kenya, and Lebanon). Faculty supervisors and students also joined online.
The event opened with student presentations from each country, with a total of 2 students from the Tokyo Center - one in person and one online - gave presentations. Participants then formed 5 theme groups based on their research interests and awareness of AI-related issues, as identified through a pre-event survey, and engaged in structured discussions in 3 stages: identifying challenges, refining themes, and organizing perspectives. A plenary reporting session was held at the end. The five theme groups were:
(1) AI and Education
(2) Multiculturalism and Multilingualism
(3) Access to Resources, Energy and Data
(4) Ways to Share Best Practices and Field Tools
(5) Training and Empowerment of Users and Developers
Secretary General Harayama facilitated Group 4, Professor NAKANO Masashi (Toyo University) facilitated Group 1, and Professor FUJIMOTO Masayo (Doshisha University) facilitated Group 5, each guiding active discussion among participants. At the closing, Mr. Shadrach, representative of CEMCA, outlined plans for establishing a student community in India and strengthening collaboration with the 3 Centers, to which the Directors of the 3 Centers expressed their support.
This event has become an important use case as the Student Communities Project is to expand its activities to other countries in the future.
