INTERVIEW
Here are stories from researchers working at Wireless Networks Research Center about their motivation for joining NICT, what they were surprised at and deeply impressed by.
DIMITAR Kolev, Ph.D.
Space Communication Systems Laboratory
Q1. What is your job?
I am a researcher in the Space Communication Systems Laboratory in NICT working mainly on space optical communications. There a number of activities I participate in: national and international collaborations with universities and companies, standardization activities, R&D related to our projects in the field.
Q2. What was the reason/factor that you decided to work at NICT?
As a Ph.D. student in Waseda University my major research topic and field of interest was free-space optical communication links. A few months before graduation, a sempai from my lab, who was already working in NICT, told me about the opportunity in the field of space optical communications. It sounded more complicated than my current work, but the light propagation through the atmosphere and the atmospheric turbulence theory are almost the same and I already had experience with tracking systems from our free-space optical experiments. One of the main reasons to consider NICT was the fact that I will be able to work on R&D in my narrow field of interest, not looking for engineering position or different field.
Q3. Please let us know if there’s any surprise, exclusive experiences and rewarding after you started working at NICT.
