Optical (HICALI) Satellite Communication System
Increasingly sophisticated remote sensing and the expanding use of aircraft and satellite communications require higher-capacity satellite communications.
NICT aims to demonstrate optical satellite communications of 10-Gbps class for uplink and downlink between geostationary orbit and the ground by installing their developed ‘HICALI’*1 (High-speed Advanced Optical Communication Equipment) on the Engineering Test Satellite No. 9.
Additionally, the HICALI project plans to conduct experiments in various scenarios; such as between a satellite and an aircraft, and between satellites. Miniaturization of the equipment is also being worked on so that it can be installed on small satellites.
